Read/write intranet and internet calendar through Lighting

Usually we have internal calendar and public calendar. Here is a sample on reading and writing both calendar through lighinting in Thunderbird. In this sample, I use “Sun Java System Calendar Server” as the intranet calendar and Google Calendar as public calendar.

1. Download and install Thunderbird.  Download url : http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/
2. Download Lighting. Download url : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2313

3. Install Lighting add-on. In Thunderbird, open menu “Tools -> Add-ons ->”, Click “Install…” button on the bottom of “Add-ons” windows, install lighting for Thunderbird

Lighting as client for Sun Java System Calendar Server

1. Open Thunderbird menu “File -> New -> Calendar…”

2. In the dialog “Locate your calendar”, select “On the Network”, Click “Next” button

3. In the next dialog, select format “Sun Java system Calendar Server (WCAP)”, input Location, such as “http://sedge3-cal1.singapore.sun.com/”, click “Next” button

4. In the next dialog “customize your calendar”, input your name, select a color, and click “Next” button.

5. In the “Calendar Server Password Required” dialog, input user name and password for the WCAP server.

6. Now you can add/modify/delete events in the Sun Java system Calendar Server (WCAP)

Lighting as client for Google Calendar

1. Download  Thunderbird add-on “Provider for Google Calendar” (https://addons.mozilla.org/zh-CN/thunderbird/addon/4631)
2. In Thunderbird, open menu “Tools -> Add-ons ->”, Click “Install…” button on the bottom of “Add-ons” windows, install add-on “Provider for Google Calendar”.
3. Open Thunderbird menu “File -> New -> Calendar…”
4. In the dialog “Locate your calendar”, select “On the Network”, Click “Next” button
5. In the next dialog, select format “Google Calendar”, input location, such as “http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/sdn.asia%40gmail.com/public/basic.ics”. The location getting from Google Calender -> Calender setting -> public address -> ICAL
6. In the “Google Calendar Login” dialog, input user name and password, that is, your google account and password. Click “OK” button
7. If your google account have read&write for the google calendar, now you may add/modify/delete events in the google calender through Lighting.
When you are in intranet, no need extra configuraiton for both of the clients.  While if you are in internet, you should be able to access the intranet calendar server.
