It took me one day to install a printer driver on Mac OS

The printer driver is not in the default driver list of Mac OS. (Fuji
Xerox DocuPrint 305). I spent lots of time on searching the driver
through google, while the fastest way is to open fujixerox web site.

I downloaded a zip file and tried to open it in Mac OS. There is a error
information. I called the hot line of fujixerox, and a girl said that I
should download a depression software to open the driver file. It took
me again long time to search and download the Stuffit Expander. It was
curious that firefox didn’t work on downloading, every time I started
downloading the Stuffit, it hung. The firefox annoyied me around 2
hours, and finally I tried to use Safari. Safari downloaded the Stuffit
file in 1 minutes. I don’t know what Apple had done behind the browser.

Now I get the depressed driver file, "FX DocuPrint 305-AP PS". As it is
a printer on network, I spend another 1 hour to try different protocol
and printer name to install the printer, and asked a colleagues to print
a sample to demonstrate the printer is fine. I send a service ticket to
report the problem "not printing" after I failed many times on the
installation.

I printed out the sample document just after sending out the email, and
I got the call from the engineer in servicedesk almost at the same time.

This period frustrated me and let me draw a conclusion that I don’t like
Mac OS.

Read/write intranet and internet calendar through Lighting

Usually we have internal calendar and public calendar. Here is a sample on reading and writing both calendar through lighinting in Thunderbird. In this sample, I use “Sun Java System Calendar Server” as the intranet calendar and Google Calendar as public calendar.

1. Download and install Thunderbird.  Download url : http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/
2. Download Lighting. Download url : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2313

3. Install Lighting add-on. In Thunderbird, open menu “Tools -> Add-ons ->”, Click “Install…” button on the bottom of “Add-ons” windows, install lighting for Thunderbird

Lighting as client for Sun Java System Calendar Server

1. Open Thunderbird menu “File -> New -> Calendar…”

2. In the dialog “Locate your calendar”, select “On the Network”, Click “Next” button

3. In the next dialog, select format “Sun Java system Calendar Server (WCAP)”, input Location, such as “http://sedge3-cal1.singapore.sun.com/”, click “Next” button

4. In the next dialog “customize your calendar”, input your name, select a color, and click “Next” button.

5. In the “Calendar Server Password Required” dialog, input user name and password for the WCAP server.

6. Now you can add/modify/delete events in the Sun Java system Calendar Server (WCAP)

Lighting as client for Google Calendar

1. Download  Thunderbird add-on “Provider for Google Calendar” (https://addons.mozilla.org/zh-CN/thunderbird/addon/4631)
2. In Thunderbird, open menu “Tools -> Add-ons ->”, Click “Install…” button on the bottom of “Add-ons” windows, install add-on “Provider for Google Calendar”.

6. In the “Google Calendar Login” dialog, input user name and password, that is, your google account and password. Click “OK” button
7. If your google account have read&write for the google calendar, now you may add/modify/delete events in the google calender through Lighting.
When you are in intranet, no need extra configuraiton for both of the clients.  While if you are in internet, you should be able to access the intranet calendar server.

Add DNS server list in OpenSolaris

Sometimes OpenSolaris can not find DNS server in DHCP mode, here is the
workaround method

1. Make sure you change role to root
$ su root
2. Change mode of file /etc/resolv.conf , modify the file content and
add DNS ip address, for example
"

nameserver 129.158.216.14
nameserver 129.158.166.14
nameserver 129.158.71.131

"
3. Overwrite /etc/nsswitch.dns with /etc/nsswitch.conf
$ cp nssswitch.dns nsswitch.conf

That ‘s OK, and no need to restart OpenSolaris.

Create ISO image from folder in Mac OS

It is quite simple in Mac OS, using hdiutil command. For example, you
have a folder naming solaristools on user’s Desktop, and hope to create
a ISO image file for the folder

1. Open terminal window
2. Change current folder to user’s desktop, for example user is "apple"
cd /Users/apple
3. Type following command
hdiutil makehybrid -o solaristools.iso solaristools

A new ISO image "solaristools" will be created on user’s desktop. You
may access to the ISO image as a CD/DVD device in Mac OS later.

The American Chamber of Commerce is disgusting

Usually I applied Visa to USA through The American Chamber of Commerce
(AmCham) in the People’s Republic of China. My company had bought the
membership for visa service, and every time I applied the visa, I need
to pay extra RMB 200 for it.

While last week’s adventure made me very angry and I swear I would
spread the bad words about the ugly America Chamber of Commerce as
possible as I can. I went to the USA ambassay for fingerprint scan on
April, 28, and normally the visa can be issued out after one or two
working days. One of my colleague got the visa just the day after the
scan day.

I told the clerk in AmCham I need the visa badly as I booked the air
ticket and hotel on May 4th. I knew it is near Labor Holiday and
anything would happen, so I called several time to make sure if I can
got the visa on the next following days.

Another colleague’s experience made me more anxiouse as he went to the
USA ambassay on the same day I went there, but he need a interview while
I just need a finger scan as I had got the B1 visa before. But he got
his visa and get back his passport just after he passed the interview,
while I was told by the clerk in AmCham that I have to wait for 2 days
and pick up my passport in AmCham’s office.

The clerk called at 4:20pm on April 30 that my visa was issued and I
could pick up my passport. The fastest way to get there is by subway and
it would take around 45 minutes or 1 hour. I asked if I could ask
somebody to pick it for me, the clerk replied I should provide several
certification files including mine and the company’s and that’s
impossbile at that time. Then I asked her if she can wait for some time
and I went there ASAP, she said she will leave office at 5:00pm. What I
can say is that I try to arrive there on time.

When I get off the subway, it was 5:09pm and I called the office,
another girl answered that the clerk who is incharge of visa just left
the office, and left no words. There should be a method to walk around
it and the ugly clerk said nothing and did nothing.

The thing make me extremly angry is the thing happened on May 4th. This
is the only morining I can make use of to get my passport in order to
catch up my plane and the conference. When I arrivied the AmCham office,
the door closed, and the office is still in holoday, different from
other company and the goverment holoday. The ugly, ugly clerk of AmCham
didn’t remind me about it at all.

There is no other words I can say how I want to blame the clerk of
AmCham. Who give them the privilege to charge so much monney and provide
so bad service?

Company Visit : Alibaba

Our team hope that the company visit would be two way communication between Sun and the software company. We would like to know what the developers need and may provide the content they have interests. As the developers in company visit have similar background, it would bring us a better opportunities to collect the requests from developers.

Alibaba may be the most famous company in Hangzhou where we have a Sun University Day, so we planed a company visit there. It became a problem to contact the correct person as our team don’t have any personal relationship with developers in this company. Finally, I contacted Kong in Alibaba through several persons as the routing: Xinfeng (Sun ISVE engineer), Fred Gu (Sun Sale), Kevin Gu (Sun SE), Andy Li(Alibaba), and Kong (Alibaba). It became a official event, and our visit looks like a one way free Java training. The result of visiting Alibaba is not as good as Tencent QQ visit, one is that the developers in Alibaba talked less, and another reason is that they didn’t show their interests, it seems any topics about Java are OK.

I learned that they adopted a unique framework in their web development, the framework is neither open source nor a commercial one. It was developed by a professor who had left the company. Is it worthy to maintain such a framework for such a famous company? It seems many companies in China created their own web framework. I had similar experience before, a senior engineer created a framework basing on Spring in 2 weeks and the team developed 2 projects basing on the framework in half an year. The senior engineer left after 3 months, and the team found more and more problems of using the framework including i18n, extensibility etc. While they don’t have other choices now as they had developed too much projects on it.

Only one developer brought his name card. Mr Yu, his title is Java Architect. It is enough for us.

Joey Shen is presenting.
